Mount Gambier March 2007

MOUNT GAMBIER WEEKEND.

What a weekend,
Once again with the aid of Ray and Robyn and there new apprentice Lucas (Kalganyi Caravan Park) also not forgetting Jane and Rudi (Limestone Coast). We had another great weekend where it all happened again. I don't think anyone went home disappointed; maybe a few tired and sore heads would be on the cards.

Brief Summary:

Around 3.00pm we heard the distant rumble of bikes as they pulled up to the office and came to a stop. Mind you a few of us who had arrived there were ready to hand them morale support once we had finished our drinks ready for another one. They looked hot but it was an enjoyable ride was the comment. Once they had got there and booked in it was down to the serious stuff who would be first in the pool. Well all the Gals hopped into the pool and made sure they marked there territory .The fellows were intent on going in at a later time (real late) but no one had brought there bathers so the question was “ What were they gonna wear? “. Luckily it got a bit chilly so all the guests and persons at the caravan park were saved the late night show. Maybe next year guys. The first night was taken up with a BBQ, which was supplied and prepared, by Ray and Robin plus their staff. It was a great time for mingling and getting to know other members from various branches. It was also the first time for one of the staff namely Lucas who is also an ambo, for a change of administering painkillers to accident victims, was introduced to our medical remedies namely the tetanus shot. Got to admit his personality opened up in the matter of a few seconds, even though I heard it took a while to get him motivated to come to work the next morning. Wonder who the culprit was who gave him the shot “ I know, not telling “. Well the night ended up with a few members left around 1.30/2.00 am in the morning including Lucas who was quite happily giving Griff lessons in massaging.

Saturday morning awoke to the sound of rain pelting down but by about 8.30 it was only overcast skies with maybe tiny drizzles here and there. There was a couple of rides planned .The first being a Dice ride which also included brekkie at the Nelson before taking off on the run. The second was the Portland run which had a few takers. They had breakfast at the Collar and Cuffs from where they proceeded to Portland a bit later. We had another couple of rides which happened one was Crazee`s uninvited ride to the Blue Lake. The story goes Crazee has been up here to the Mount a few times but everytime he has been here he has never seen the blue lake so this year with determination he was gonna make that venture rain, hail or shine. He leaves the park and heads down the main road and comes up to Jubilee hway where he indicates to go right. Now it so happens also at the lights is Fred, VB and a few others going to Portland no dramas until the next part of the ride comes along mind you Fred, VB and the others quickly take off so who do they see turning, you guessed it non other than Crazee so what was just a cruise by himself was gonna end up as a great ride around the Blue Lake. Crazee who was not gonna have any part of this was quickly waving and pointing in the opposite directions “NOT THIS WAY YOURE GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION “ .I assume they left him cause when he came back a bit later he was on his own again. Most of the afternoon was taken with refreshments, chatting and even a few of us had power naps to help us through the rest of the evening from our tedious night before.

After 3.30pm everyone was rocking back to the park in preparation for the bus trip to the RSL for dinner with a few of the limestone mob. Time was quickly sneaking by it was getting closer to 5.30 when the first lot of folks would be shuffled to the club and then the bus would be bought back for the second group to go. But there was a problem our two blokes on the scooters who had left around 9.30 in the morning to go exploring weren’t back. Were they alright, were they lost or were they dancing in the woods with the kangas and emus naked by the moonlight, No one knew what they were up to or whether they had booked out which they hadn’t after confirming with Lucas at the desk. Well we can’t do much till we get back to the Park but then on the way back to the park about 9.15 pm we noticed the scooters which we now call pocket rockets were parked on the side of the road opposite The Gambier .At least we knew then they were still around so we could relax again. That didn’t take too long. We were back sitting down with Hoppy having a few ales and chatting when all of a sudden Rod and Reg rock up on their pocket rockets put their stands down and then was greeted with where the f%^& have you been oops no it wasn’t it was We were getting a bit concerned about you, Then he started Oh we were gonna go on the Portland ride but then we got adventurous and we did end up in Portland Via Casterton, past Wando Bridge to Wilsons Tree return to Coleraine, Hamilton, Marino, Heywood, Portland, Cape Bridgewater, Nelson then finally back to Mt Gambier having done just under 450kms in the day touring and sightseeing. After careful deliberation we now call them the Leyland Brothers Mike and Mal. When you see them ask them who’s who?

Anyway once again a few of us stayed up but not too late this nite as everyone knew they had to be up and ready for brekky and then departure back to Adelaide. Once again there was plenty to eat for breakfast with a fortunate few getting seconds. Finally hands were shook people were thanked and goodbyes were said as everyone got organised for their journey home. Once again it was a great weekend.
